Murphy Group - Inclusive Recruitment
The Challenge
Murphy wanted to strengthen the consistency, fairness and inclusivity of recruitment across its business, ensuring hiring managers could confidently recruit the very best people while reflecting Murphy’s values and culture.
As the organisation continued to grow across multiple projects and locations, Murphy recognised the importance of reducing bias, creating a positive candidate experience and equipping interviewers with practical tools to make objective recruitment decisions.
Rather than delivering a traditional interview skills course, Murphy wanted people to experience the impact that recruitment decisions can have on candidates, teams and the wider organisation.
Our Solution
Since 2022, Enact has delivered our bespoke Inclusive Recruitment experiential learning programme across numerous Murphy business locations and projects, supporting hiring managers, operational leaders and recruitment teams involved in selecting new employees.
The highly interactive workshop follows the recruitment journey from job advert through to onboarding using realistic workplace scenarios performed by professional actors. Delegates analyse each stage of the process, identify where unconscious bias can influence decisions and practise better approaches through discussion, forum theatre and live interview exercises.
The programme has been fully aligned to Murphy’s values, ensuring participants explore how principles such as Integrity & Respect, One Murphy, Always Deliver, Never Harm, Dedication and Continually Improve can be demonstrated throughout recruitment.
To help embed learning beyond the workshop, delegates are provided with practical Murphy recruitment resources, including values-based interview question banks and structured interview guidance, alongside access to Enact’s Inclusive Recruitment online resource page for continued learning and support.
Practical Takeaways
- Review interview questions to make them more open and objective.
- Plan and structure interviews more effectively.
- Challenge bias using the Pillars of Challenge model.
- Share learning with colleagues involved in recruitment.
- Review recruitment techniques before future interviews.
- Think more carefully before making assumptions about candidates.
Why it worked
Rather than telling delegates what good recruitment looks like, the workshop allows them to experience it.
By watching realistic recruitment scenarios unfold, questioning characters, stepping into conversations and practising interviews themselves, participants recognise how small decisions can unintentionally exclude talented candidates and how simple changes can create a fairer, more inclusive recruitment process.
Combined with Murphy’s own interview resources and Enact’s online resource page, the learning continues long after the workshop has finished.
